Contents: The fragment contains the chants for the Mass Proper of the third Sunday of
Advent. On the recto side there are two chants that do not belong to today's standard
Gregorian repertory: the Gradual "Tollite portas principes vestras et elevamini" and the
Gradual Verse "Quis ascendet in montem Domini ". The Alleluia Rex noster, although
ancient, is rare. On the verso side, the Communion is followed by the rubric "Feria IIII
in Quatuor Tempora [Adventus]" whose chants were probably written on the next (lost)
page.
Condition of document: Damaged. The fragment is now used as book cover; a folder
in the middle of the folio obstructs the reading of the contents. On the recto there are
two library stickers, which identify the book that the fragment covers. The first sticker
reads: "502 A-3-1-50", the second: "Fazenda N. 22".
Page layout: c. 280 x c. 440, one column c. 230 x c. 340, 16 lines alternating text and
music.
Type of script: Gothic
Type of notation: Aquitanian (Portuguese variety)
Decoration: Blue initials with blue filigree designs, red initials with blue/sepia
decorations, brown initial with red decoration.
Inscriptions and marks: A modern hand added the inscription "1578-1579 Livro da
Fazenda" on the recto, left margin of the page. Another hand added an inscription on
the verso (picture 2): it is in Portuguese and it could give further information about the
provenance of the fragment. One more modern hand penned "A-3-1-50" on the verso
side.
Remarks: This is possibly one of the few fragments in Guimarães mentioned by Solange
Corbin (see below) although she describes the contents as excerpts from a Marian Mass
in Advent.

Contents: Chants for the Rogation days before Ascension Thursday, and for the period
from Pentecost to Trinity Sunday. Very interesting fragment, it contains chants that do
not belong to the standard Gregorian repertory and which reflect a local tradition. The
contents partly coincide with the texts in the Braga Missal of 1498. Parallels can be found
between the rite for the Rogations in this fragment and the version of the Gaillac
Gradual, similar to Braga.
Condition of document: Damaged. The two pages of this bifolium are not consecutive.
The fragment is mutilated/torn along the borders, especially at the bottom. Two stickers
on f. Av, the bigger one covers part of the chant. The text is: "(N. 1) Procuratorio. S.
João de [...] 1576 a 1577. Lembranças curiosas de 1577 a 1580". The second library
sticker shows a probably ancient shelf-mark "1648 [...]". Other reference written in ink:
A-5-2-149 (also on Ar, without the first letter). Holes are in correspondence to the
central folder of the bifolium. Set of pricks along the vertical external border of Ar, Bv.
The folders indicate that the fragment was used as a book cover. Wrinkles and spots of
humidity.
Foliation/Pagination: The original foliation is lost, traces of it can be found at the top
of f. Bv; however one can read many references with roman numerals to the pages where
the chant written as incipit could be found complete.
Page layout: f. A: c. 250 x c. 270, f. B (Non uos): c. 235 x c. 270.
Type of script: Transitional (Protogothic)
Type of notation: Aquitanian (Portuguese variety)
Decoration: Very simple decoration. Plain initials in red and blue. Display script in red.
Text and notation in black. The notation is written around a red line, a later hand added a
letter at the beginning of each chant which represents the pitch of the red line.

Condition of document: Damaged; the spine is completely separated from the covering
boards; from the spine, many of the folios are quite detached; some humidity; text has
good legibility, although sometimes slightly effaced, due to the use; the use also darkened
the outer corners of upper margins; folios 1, 2, 13 and 68 are apparently missing; four
folios — 72, 49, 69 and an unnumbered one (or the number is effaced) — are misbound
and out of order and presently placed between original folios 11 and 12; the same
happens with folio 38, which is currently placed after folio 43; between folios 44 and 45
there is an unnumbered folio and folio 32; folios 54-56 are placed after folio 57; before
folio 58, there are five unnumbered folios, because the upper margin was sliced off;

Remarks: It is probably the second part of the book LC 3 (Gradual; from Advent up to

date, by both the same copyist and illuminator. These are the only books to share the
same copyist and illuminator. For the other Hieronymite books in the Museu of Alberto
